REFLECT: Amos 9:11-15 looked ahead to Israel’s restoration and this psalm looks back in remembrance of that time of God’s blessing. In what season of your life was God’s provision for you so clear that others could easily recognize it? Verses 4-6 find the psalmist in a different place, one of weakness and need. If you lived in a Negev-like desert, what difference would the unexpected provision of rain make in the short-term? In the longer-term?
RESPOND: For Christ-followers, the Holy Spirit works to align our desires and dreams with those God has for us. What godly dream do you have for your life, your family and your community? Ask God to restore you, as he did for his people of old, so that you may experience his joy and provision in such a powerful way that others will be able to see the fruits of your faith and give praise to God.
1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dreamed.
2 Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy.
Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.”
3 The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.
4 Restore our fortunes, Lord, like streams in the Negev.
5 Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.
6 Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.
